Vision examinations are child's play for the Pediatric Resident!

The Resident provides comprehensive vision examinations in three clinical rotations:

  • Infant, Toddler, and Children's clinic for children from birth to 6 years of age.
  • Special Visual Assessment Clinic for infants, children and adults with multiple disabilities including visual impairment.
  • Pediatric Clinic for children from 6 to 13 years.

In addition, the Pediatric Resident participates in school vision screenings for preschoolers, kindergarten, and second-grade students enrolled in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Recommendations for pediatric vision care include a vision screening at birth followed by vision examinations at 9 months, 3 years, and 5 years of age to diagnose and treat significant refractive error, strabismus, amblyopia, and ocular disease.

In addition to the pictures below, see our link for more about the Pediatric Residency Program.

Monocular visual acuity testing made easy and fun by using patch glasses,
a lap card with matching symbols (also see picture above), and
honeynut Cheerios® to reinforce correct responses

Retinoscopy with lens bars to determine if a
child needs glasses for significant refractive error

Unilateral and alternate cover test
to assess alignment of the eyes

Finding the face on the Stereosmile® test, indicating
that the child has good depth perception
