Dr. Jewell is a world-renowned expert on research and training in biostatistics and epidemiology. He is Chair of both the Graduate Group in Biostatistics and the Graduate Group in Genomics and Computational Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He oversees the graduate curriculum and admissions for graduate training not only in biostatistics, but also more broadly biostatistical support for epidemiology and other areas of public health and the biological sciences. His personal research program focuses on the application of biostatistical methodology to epidemiological and clinical studies, with an emphasis on longitudinal and survival studies and infectious diseases. Dr. Jewell has worked on several studies of HIV and AIDS, and more recently on SARS. He has had close ties with graduate students in Optometry and Vision Science in providing statistical support for their studies. He is the author of the widely recognized book Statistics for Epidemiology, and from 1994-2000 held the position of Vice Provost for the Berkeley campus. BCSDP trainees would be able to focus on biostatistical methodology for application to epidemiological and clinical studies.
