Application Overview: Reapplicant-Status Students
The application deadline for the 2007-2008 admissions cycle closed on Friday, December 14, 2007. Please check back in August 2008 for updated information about the 2008-2009 admissions cycle
To be considered for admission to the School of Optometry in Re-applicant Status, you must meet the requirements outlined below.
For previous applicants who had a status of "Complete" and were then subsequently denied admission, we hold applications and supporting documents for only one year. Therefore, if you applied to the School of Optometry more than a year ago, we will no longer have your previous application and supporting documents on file.
For applicants who did not fully complete the application process, we do not maintain files for incomplete applicants and purge files at the end of each admissions cycle.
Please keep in mind that Berkeley Optometry only considers OAT scores for three years and OAT scores must be up-to-date for the reapplication process as well. Therefore, for the 2007-2008 admissions cycle, we will only consider OAT scores from September 1, 2004 until December 1, 2007. |

Application |
Berkeley Optometry Requires an Online Application:
Application Closed December 14, 2007.
All re-applicants must re-submit an on-line application. The on-line application for a Reapplicant differs only in that you are asked to answer one longer essay question updating us on your activities since the previous admissions cycle.

Bachelor's Degree |
You must have or be in the process of completing a bachelor's degree. This program must include the courses (or their equivalents at other institutions) outlined in the Pre-Professional Curriculum. |

Grade Point Average |
The Division of Graduate Studies requires a minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (see the
Profile of First-Year Classes). |

Take the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) by Dec. 1, 2007 to be considered for admission in Fall 2008. |

Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation |
Please note:
- Unless you have completed new course work during 2006-2007, you do not need to re-submit transcripts. If you are submitting new transcripts, all official transcripts must remain unopened and sealed.
- We recommend that you submit new letters of recommendation or suggest that you have your letters "refreshed," with more recent information.
- All recommenders whom you select must complete the Berkeley Optometry Letter of Recommendation Form.
- All recommendation forms (LOR Form), and the corresponding letter(s), must be sealed in an envelope with the recommender's signature across the seal. While we would prefer to have the Letter of Recommendation Form and corresponding letter in the same envelope, we will accept them independently, as long as both are in envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal.
- If you are submitting Letters of Recommendation through a letter writing service at your college or university, we understand that you may not be permitted to mail the dossier of letters on your own behalf. However, the three recommenders you have selected and identified on your Berkeley Optometry application must also complete the Letter of Recommendation Form.
- Some Pre-Health Advising offices compile academic/ personal information and will also coordinate the collection of letters of recommendation in order to provide a "Committee Letter" for pre-optometry students. Please note that Berkeley Optometry does not accept Committee Letters (one comprehensive letter) and/or letters written by a committee in lieu of three letters of recommendation that have been individually written.
- Please include your name, phone number, and e-mail address within the package/envelope you have submitted to Berkeley Optometry in case we need to follow up with you.
Note: The 3 required Letters of Recommendation are critical to your application. Suggested sources
would include:

a professor with whom you have done personal work (such as assisted on a specific project or served as a TA or reader).

an optometrist who can state through documented experience that you know what the profession of optometry entails.*

an employer or extracurricular activity advisor who can comment about your maturity, diligence, and conscientiousness.
Note: Do not send Letters of Recommendation from coworkers, someone you have supervised, relatives, or personal and family friends. These are inappropriate and can be detrimental to the review of your application.
Note: You may begin submitting your Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation on Sept. 11, 2007.
* Volunteer experience with an optometrist is highly appropriate in your preparation for optometry school. First, as a prospective optometry professional, you may gain valuable insight into whether optometry is the right career path for you. Second, you may develop the opportunity to receive a letter of support from an optometry professional, a vital element of your application.

| Interviews |
Applicants who meet the requirements for admission and are being considered for acceptance into Berkeley Optometry will be interviewed on-campus. After the review of applications by the Admissions Committee, students who qualify for an interview will be
notified personally.
Because excellent communication skills are vital in the intimate profession of Optometry, a personal interview is a prerequisite for admission to Berkeley Optometry.
The Admissions Committee conducts interviews of applicants by invitation only, and we ask that you please refrain from contacting us to request an interview. Receiving an invitation to interview should be taken as a sign of interest on the part of the Admissions Committee. Invitations will be sent out in mid-December for our Interview Day to be held in late January.

Admission to Berkeley Optometry is competitive (see the Profile of First-Year Classes). Physical facilities limit enrollment to approximately 60 for an incoming class, yet almost four times as many applications are typically received in a given admissions cycle. For the past five years, the cumulative mean grade-point average for those admitted was 3.45, and the range was 2.6 - 4.0. Selection is based on previous college-level academic achievement, OAT scores, and qualitive factors such as biographical information, assessment of suitability for performing clinical work, letters of recommendation, and interview data. The Admissions Committee of the School of Optometry strives to admit students who will be successful both in the academic program and in the practice of optometry. We also comply with Federal and State law in following a Non-discrimination Policy for Admissions.

FYI: In order to facilitate a productive session, you will be asked to submit an unofficial copy of your transcripts. You should also provide course descriptions if you have specific questions regarding courses you have taken or are planning to take.
